It was a bit of an interesting day here in Salinas. We had the Pumpkin Starlight arrive just after the local finished its duties in the yard and stopped for lunch before heading towards Spreckles. Then just a little while ago, about a half hour late, 184 was caught leading the northbound Starlight.

Who builds railcars/boxcars these days? Where are they located?

May sound like an odd question. Today I saw 25 brand spankin new TBOX box cars in the UP receiving yard. If they dont hit the hump yard soon it will be a different story.

Also counted 10 brand new UP coil cars.
Even about 10 new bulkhead flats loaded with GP wood.

Business is good somewhere. Anybody got ideas?

Thanks,

The Inland Terminal Model Railroad Club in Lawndale, CA, is seeking new members.

The S scale club is housed in a club-owned 20 foot by 40 foot building and operates 2,000 feet of continuous run standard gauge mainline featuring a three-level helix. Also featured is a variety of equipment, including converted American Flyer. The layout was started in the 1950s as a freelance design.

Once a classical configuration with two dispatch/operator stations the layout today uses wireless walk-around cabs for locomotive control. Track and turnouts are hand laid with mostly Code 100 rail to reflect the scale nature of the layout. In addition there is a 150 foot Sn3 single mainline and yard under construction.

This club will be featured on the layout tour of the Thirty-third National Narrow Gauge Convention this coming August.

The club is open on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. If you would like to attend, please contact either Reggie Cunningham (310-717-0130) or James McAuliffe (714-412-5093) to verify that the club is open.

The Inland Terminal Model Railroad Club is located at 4734 West 152nd Street in Lawndale. Parking is available on the street or across Inglewood Avenue in the shopping center parking lot. Here is a map link:

Motorcar Excursion on the Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway

Motorcar Operators West held an excursion on the Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway right of way on May 4th and 5th and my wife and I had the opportunity to ride along. The original plan was to set on at Davenport and ride to Watsonville where the cars would be turned for the return to Davenport. Unfortunately a trestle fire occurred at Mile Post 23.54 prior to the event and an alternate route was sought to make up for the lost track mileage. Roaring Camp came to the rescue and Felton would be the new set on and take off location.

We arrived at Roaring camp around 8:00AM on Saturday May 4th and observed motorcars being set on to the track. Roaring Camp is such a wonderful setting. The last time I was up at Felton my wife and I were sorting through a unit of lumber in the ProBuild yard adjacent to Roaring Camp. The sound of one of Roaring Camp’s steam locomotive’s whistle echoed through the hills and the smell of cut Douglas Fir filled the air. It was easy to imagine you were transported to another time.

The motorcars looked so small next to Roaring Camp’s CF7’s.

After being set on the track the motorcars were moved to the start location.

The president of Motorcar Operators West, the director of motorcar operations from Iowa Pacific and the Roaring Camp safety officer coordinated plans for the excursion. Roaring Camp had put on a second beach train to follow 15 minutes behind the regularly scheduled beach train due to a large private group that had reserved the train. The motorcar excursion would leave Felton heading to the Boardwalk ahead of the beach trains so they would be able continue to Watsonville before the beach trains were scheduled to arrive at the Boardwalk. Coordinating 44 motorcars and two beach trains on such a tight schedule would be a challenge.

The safety officer, Ian Applegate, conducted the safety meeting for the portion of the excursion that will be run on the Roaring Camp Right of Way.
Exiting the Mission Hill Tunnel and waiting for clearance to move on to Chestnut Street. In the past, when motorcar excursions were held on the Roaring Camp Line, the motorcars would turn before entering the tunnel and then return to Roaring Camp. Tom Sharratt, Director of Motorcar Operation for Iowa Pacific, conducted the safety meeting for the portion of the excursion that will be run on the Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay Railway Right of Way.

This is the first time a motorcar excursion had been held on this portion of the rail line, and due to this first time opportunity, there were double the number of motorcars that typically attend. The excursion was running a little behind of the planned schedule and the cars have to get moving to clear the line so the Roaring Camp Beach Train can back down Beach Street and onto the Boardwalk.

After spending my day stuck (field trip, other bus drivers not into trains...) at Knotts and riding the train a dozen or 2 times. I still was not able to get a good look at the yard around the engine house. It appears I was too nosy and security and I had a chat about it. I was always in public areas, not a tresspasser.

Security understood my interest and after that left me alone. The log ride and ghostrider are out of service what else am I going to do.

At the north grade crossing I saw a 3-way switch. Mainline, engine house, passing siding? or yard lead? (I think my picture taking of the 3-way switch made me popular). How long is that center track? Where does it go?

Does anyone have a plot plan of their yard? The Google satellite map on my smart phone does not really match what I saw.

There doesnt appear to be a wye any where there but it looked like the spare tenderwas facing the wrong way.

Thanks,
It was on the K-CIG4. The westbound Iron Ore train had an SD70ACe, AC4400CW, ES44AC, and AC4400CTe for power in a 2x2 config.

So my friend Kyle and I were sitting at the junction of the Needles and LA Subdivisions, when in the distance we saw a westbound bnsf stack train. We thought nothing of it, just another stack train after all.

We noticed it had stopped, once again, no biggie, there is a junction there afterall, and something might have had to go up the UP tracks or something of that sort.

Then we noticed something.... the power had uncoupled from the train , and left the cars on the main.

We got in the car and drove up quickly. We saw the locomotives start to back down a sidding next to the main where two locos were already parked, (one dash 9, and one c4 if I remember correctly, they were nose to nose).

At first we thought that they were picking the units up. But then we realized they were leaving the last loco from the consist, a bluebonnet geep, on the siding. The power then left, picked up the train, and continued on the way.

Anyone have any idea what happened? The geep did the whole auto start thing for a little bit and made some white smoke, so maybe it was malfunctioning?

Photo to come soon........

From NCTD Today. I'll be riding on Saturday! Hoooorrrrrraaaaayyyyyyy! I was about to die, lol!

I wonder if there will be many people (besides railfans) riding, that feel comfortable about it...

SPRINTER Returns to Service

Oceanside – North County Transit District, its contractor Veolia Transportation, and its sub-contractor Bombardier Transportation are pleased to announce the SPRINTER light rail train will resume full, regularly scheduled service at 4:33 a.m. Saturday, May 18. The SPRINTER will operate on the regular schedule which is posted at GoNCTD.com. The last day of the supplemental express bus service will be Friday, May 24.

The resumption of full service comes following the completion of extensive safety testing, the review of replacement parts, and inspections of the overall vehicle and railroad infrastructure by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

The SPRINTER, its signals, and tracks passed all testing with outstanding results and will resume service with vehicles equipped with split disc rotors on the center axles.

An unparalleled commitment to safety is the guiding principle at the transit agency. During the past two months, NCTD, Veolia, and Bombardier worked collaboratively to implement business improvement strategies to strengthen maintenance practices and improve contractor oversight, all ahead of NCTD’s original schedule. The FRA and CPUC reviewed and approved these strategies.

In addition to repairing the vehicles and instituting the maintenance and oversight enhancements, NCTD, Veolia, and Bombardier performed other routine maintenance work on the SPRINTER, which included engine checks, air conditioning system maintenance, graffiti removal, extensive cleaning, replacement of worn seat fabric, and exterior waxing of the vehicles to ensure the SPRINTER returns to service in like-new condition.

‘Blue Crew’ ambassadors will staff SPRINTER stations the first four days of operations to provide assistance and welcome back passengers. On Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19 they will be at the stations from 7 – 11 a.m. and 1 – 5 p.m. On Monday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 21 the Blue Crew will be out from 5 – 9 a.m. and 2 – 6 p.m.
------------------------

Hope to see everyone riding on Saturday and in the future!
