Trestles Beach Trek: 08.08.09 - Images

Here are a few images captured during the few hours I was able to hang at Trestles Beach with the group.

It was a bit of a trek in itself to get to the beach from the parking location and I was glad to have the cooler with wheels to pile stuff on. The walk back was a bit more since it was uphill.

Anyways, I was glad we were able to get together there and do some documentation of the area before it changes.

I wandered around a bit and did not shoot a train from the same spot twice. The sun angle was a bit on the distracting side and the elevations around the trestle itself leave little to work with in my opinion... still there are spots I did not toy with as others did.

First train to pass through after Jeff, Fred, Brett, my wife, daughter and I joined Ken and his family as well as Marshall and Mike already there was a southbound Amtrak with the low level set and great dome.

I snapped a few images from our easyshade location.

We had some info of a Northbound train coming our way which was thought to be the Coaster set Amtrak had leased for Del Mar service. We all waited and when the train arrived it turned out to be just a plain Amtrak Surfliner set. Head Scratch

Anyways here are a few images of them.

1 - Crossing the north trestle

2 - Blurring passed the County Line sign

3 - Rounding the cliff and out of sight.

I wandered down to the trestle to try for a few angles after the actual Coaster set was spotted coming south through San Clemente pier.

Here are two images of the Coaster set on the trestle.

I spent some more time taking images of the trestle playing with depth of field and focusing patterns.

Here are a few of the trestle to share.

I had a shot planned out for the next southbound train but grew impatient waiting and wandered out of place by the time the train came along.

What ended up being my last image was taken out of haste to just get something.

I broke for lunch and packed up after that.

Curious to see what others got while wandering.. and what they got after I left as well.

Thanks for looking and I hope to see other images added.

Chris

Great pictures. Looks like it was worth the effort.

I'm out of the loop for sure, what are they planning there? Are they going to remove the trestle? Double track?

I didn't know the coaster ran north of Oceanside. Was this a special or does this happen often? I quickly looked at the gonctd.com site and didn't see any mention of any stations north of Oceanside.

Check "Amtrak Del Mar Service" thread on this board explaining various measures employed to add capacity for race season, including charter of Coaster equipment to supplement regular Surfliner schedules s/o O.C.

check "'Trestles'. Shovel ready and about to be modernized" thread also on this board for link to news article about project.

Chris, You posted a very fine set of images. I like the first capture of the low level set and the color rendition of the trestles.

We had a great time while we were there. We arrived sometime around 8:30. The Coaster set made its northbound pass over the trestles just after we crossed under them and were walking on the sandy path to our spot on the beach. A little while after Marshall and Mike arrived, I took out my camera and joined Marshall down by the shoreline to catch some of the surfing action and keep an eye on my daughter while she was playing in the water.

1. While there a southbound Metrolink passed by with one of the new ugly scheme locos pushing.

2. Mike picks his spot to set up his screen tent while my wife reviews for the RN test.

I could see Chris and his family making their way down the path and notice Jeff with them. I went over to help. Our beach site grew as we set up Jeff's EZ-up.

3. This image provides a view of the site after rejoining Marshall to catch more surfing action.
Brett and Fred had arrived when I captured this image.

Now for some train action:

4. Northbound Surfliner crossing the county line.

5. One of my captures of the southbound Coaster.

6. A southbound Surfliner approaching with the engineer waving.

7. The low levels heading north as they cross the trestles.

8. My last shot for now is of a southbound Surfliner crossing the trestles.

We packed up and began our journey home. Jeff and Fred also departed. Fred's hand cart was a big help as we made the up hill trek to our vehicles.

Again, we had a great time. I'm looking forward to what others have to share.

Thanks for looking.

Ken
