Close Marshall, but no cigar. If you change one word you will have it.... V SLOCONDR mkstarks Wrote:wrote: T.R.T = Tie Replacement Train? I was also out there all last weekend, and boy did the flood gates open as soon as the sunset. Had no idea that UP had so many trains. =P V SLOCONDR |

Atta Boy Mike...... that's its. Like I said, once upon a time it was the P-811 but UP changed it to "Track Renewal Machine"

You know V, when I first saw this title I thought HWY 101. I got real excited. That would just be UP wouldn't it. Having a line with almost 0 traffic and making it a double track. Hey thanks for the description.

RE: HWY 111 laying new track
Point of order: The T.R.T. and the P-811 are two different aminals: One lays new track and the other can change out not only ties but rail as well. Which is which ? I'm not sure anymore ...
TCS - maybe they're indiscriminate about what it's called .. |

It's quite something to watch in action, but more amazing to see how much track they can relay in a very, VERY short amount of time. I first saw them at MP 377 under the swing-set sig bridge and they were going to town on the #1 track headed up. By the time I came down again in the PM, they were all the way up in the valley past Tehach, and were over on #2. Such a feat would've been impossible 25 years ago, even with an MOW army. It was all the more interesting to watch the "tie shuttle" gantry crane pick up a load of ties from the train, and then scoot toward the point, unload them, and scoot back again for another batch. Fascinating engineering at work here. For the amount of track and ties being laid, there were precious few people on the job, too, compared to years past. |

RE: HWY 111 laying new track
It is indeed a most fascinating operation to witness from the old rails being peeled to the side, the old wooden ties scooped up, ballast plowed outward, new concrete ties dropped and spaced, new railed pulled into position (with and without a rail heater) and the whole operation rolling on unspiked and unclipped track. Those gantry cranes are a trip to watch, especially when they're shuttling both kinds of ties in opposite directions.
TCS - here's some, gimme those |

The T.R.T is the newer, and faster, machine. This new guy (chuckmgr1) on WCRF may know the particulars. How about it newbie? V SLOCONDR (BOCM1) V SLOCONDR |
