Just some memories...

UP 2113 leads the local switching Hunts in Fullerton in October of 1994. In the background are the ATSF tracks that served the facility. I think Hunts is one of the very few industries on the west coast that was served by three railroads at the same time (SP, ATSF and UP).

The local (symboled LZB44 at the time, running out of City of Industry) takes its train across the ATSF diamonds at Basta in November of 1993, with two loads of corn syrup for Coca Cola. At the time UP only went to Anaheim about 1-2 times a week. Coca Cola was the only steady customer south of Hunts but there were a couple of shippers off of Highland Ave in Fullerton that got cars once in a blue moon.

Lastly, another shot that can't be repeated, the local heads onto the SP trackage at Colima Jct in Whittier in August of 1996 (UP called it Colima Jct., SP just called it Colima).

Thanks for posting these rare images, Chris! Is the Coca-Cola plant you're talking about the same place as the current day Nor-Cal Beverage? If so, they still are steadily receiving two tank cars of corn syrup. I remember the local spotting cars at the industries off of Highland Ave. Seemed like a boxcar or two 1-2 times per month. I'm still trying to figure out where Colima is exactly.

Thanks again Chris!

Yes, NorCal Beverage is what used to be Coca-Cola's Minutemaid OJ plant. When UP abandoned south of Basta in the mid 90s they turned that corn syrup business over to the ATSF.

Colima was where Mills Ave crossed the tracks off of Lambert. Google Maps still shows the location as "Colima"

Thanks Chris.. very much enjoying your images of how it used to be.

Here is a modern day image from Colima taken in August 2007 when the LOA36R tied down here for a few hours.

There is still a crossbuck for theUP grade here - at least it looks to be rather old.

(Edit: Changed photo - Uploaded wrong one to start with - like the B&W better)

And here is a page from an 80's era SP SPIN book showing the area.

Of course the former UP ROW is being developed into a walking path which starts at Mills and heads North West.

Do you recall when UP and SP stopped running separate locals to Fullerton? It was well after the UP-SP merger was finalized. I'm thinking it was during 1997 or even early-1998.

Nice pictures, by the way.

David, I think it was 1998. UP did obtain trackage rights on the SP from Bartolo through Los Nietos shortly before the merger so the line through Whittier could be abandoned. Of course, I only caught the detoured UP local once in Santa Fe Springs (in the rain), that was odd at the time.

" I think Hunts is one of the very few industries on the west coast that was served by three railroads at the same time (SP, ATSF and UP).", of course the Bastanchury packing house[s] just up the line were another. Guess together they gave Fullerton some rail distinction. Tnx for taking and sharing the great pix, Shadow, even tho they've now vanished from thesite:>(.
