Hello All.. just a quick update here about this Saturday.
As of right now - Rain and Snow are forcasted for Hesperia, which is above the pass - so likely the weather will be the same below. Concensus is to go ahead with the event come Rain/Snow or Shine. One note however - the location has been moved mostly due to the weather that is taking place most of this week. The normal location has roads in that are prone to larger puddles after rain and the immediate area has no real run-offso there is worry of the ground being a big mud pie. Also there is some concern of security issues at the location. So - to be on the safe and fun side - This is the official announcement that the location will be our tried and true Pilgrimage location. Attached below (In two post) are Google Maps. Here is the GPS Coordinate (thanks rtWolf) N34 20.159 W117 26.511 Hope to see you all out there - dress warm as the forcasted high is in the mid to high 40's and the low is in the 20's. kenszok Wrote:I'm going to have to wear thicker socks and an extra coat.:DI will probably have four or five layers on and all Ken needs is an extra pair of socks... go figure. ~ ~ ~ Plan is to deploy the Cajona Hut on Pilgrim's Hill as per Chris's post above. I have the vision of the hut with a dusting of snow with the Hawaiian decor gnetly swaying in the breeze. Now that's a mental image that will put a smile on your face. Has the makings for memoriable event Weather conditions (mainly the wind) and attendance will dictate how long we'll keep the Cajona hut deployed. I am hoping to deploy on arrival (about 6:00am) and deploy around 6:00pm'ish, or maybe later). If there is snow on the ground or falling, it would behoove us to be able to go mobile and get the most out of the winter wonderland that we can. Just depends who is interested in staying close to Camp Bass and who is interested in trolling the dirt roads for trains. Like Chris typed, it is an all day event for us; rain, snow, sleet, fog or even sunshine will not drive us away. But that weather may call that we drive around and photograph the trains in the weather. We'll have the desert power-paks fully charged and ready for ATCS and lights. guess that about covers it. did I miss anything ?? ~ jeff |

Here is a road condition report from Ken. He was up there and found the ground fairly saturated: ken wrote me in an email:This morning, I drove up to the site for this year's Big Cajona. Powerline Road was ok but soft. My car struggled a bit as I got near the crest of the road leading up to the site. Heading down from the site was a minor adventure as my front slid around a bit. It was raining at the time which added to the sloppiness of the road. I don't think it is suppose to rain tomorrow until later in the day. At the summit over look, it was a mixture of rain and snow falling, much more rain than snow.
~ jeff |

I went up to the pass this moring before work, but I didn't stay around too long. Took a drive to the site. My front wheel drive RAV 4 struggled a little bit going up the road to the site, but made it. I went up to the pullover spot above the big cut below Summit. The temperature according to my dash thermometer was 38°.

Everything 's a go here... Plan is to get to Cajon at 6:00am. Just a last minute reminder on a Cal-Trans closure at Green River in Corona. I heard on KFI that all eastbound lanes will be closed overnight. Haven't heard what time they will be opening back up. Then the westbound lanes will be closed on Saturday night.
see eu-there !! ~ jeff at 11:06pm |

Been home about an hour from the Cajona Ekolu. It was a blast, and the weather was actually rather good. We did not get rained on, were surrounded by snow in every direction throughout the day and the UP and BNSF provided a mass of trains as usual.
Big thank you to everyone who made it out for the day and for visits. Will close this thread for posting and direct you to the Past Roam-N-Foam's section for images sure to come. Chris Chris Walker - Forum Owner |
