RE: San Diego WILL Become a quiet zone: 6:2 vote
Quad Gates are not required. What happens is a city will input the crossing that they want into an FRA database and with data on the type and number of trains, type and amount of traffic on the road crossing, and the history of incidents at the crossings will come up with a recommendation on what type of improvement is needed. Then the decisions begin. Sometimes Exit Gates (which people refer to as Quad Gates), sometimes medians, sometimes nothing. I live near a QZ and at on one road they did nothing to improve the crossing (had Gates) and at another they installed medians to prevent people easily driving around the gates which it already had (I believe 80' back from the gates), and that was it.
Also another point, I live close to the tracks where if I look over my fence I can see the trains, and with the QZ one thing I can tell is that my wife and I notice when they blow the horns, and we tend to wonder, what's going on. So now the horns give us a heighten sense of awareness, where before it was just normal course of events. One of the "evil" developers along the line is none other than Prologis, formerly Catellus - Santa Fe's real estate corporation. It's always those dmaned greedy developers causing trouble ...
Rant over. I agree roee, I'm used to hearing the trains blowing for St. College and Placentia avenues but ti gets my attention when it's Kraemer or Rose (and the Olive sub). TCS - will affect railfanning ? nope. |

I did not intend for this to turn into a brawl over train horns, but clearly, that is what this has come to. I think we should just end this, sorry I even brought it up. MSA MSA - a CoasterFan |

Read it here: http://globalrailfan.webs.com/railfannews.htm Not a very reliable or updated source. Reread the link at the beginning of the thread, the entire point of the article is that the representatives for the city of San Diego voted to provide the rest of the necessary funding to cover the project. And I will reemphasize before signing out of this thread that the point I think the rails are trying to make, more then anything else, is that a Quiet zone does not ban the use of the horn (As much as the media wants you to believe that), it merely lifts the requirement placed on the crew to use it under all circumstances. A lot of Railfans equate a Quiet Zone to crews not being at all allowed to use the horn. This is simply not true; at no time can the railroad, or FRA for that matter completely ban the use of an available safety device, they can lift the requirement to use it and request that it only be used when necessary. That said I'm sure if there is a trespasser incident in "Horn Alley" once the quiet zone is implemented, one of the first questions asked of the engineer will be "Did you Use the Horn?" As I indicated before, ask yourself why you really want to argue against a quiet zone before you really open your mouth, you might find something out about yourself you didn't realize earlier. Personally, becoming a Rail got me to realizing that while I don't encourage Quiet Zones, I'm not against them either. I see benefits to both using the horn at all times, and not using the horn at all times, In the end I'm interested in seeing how this turns out. Now, I'll get off my here and join Mike in shutting up.

"Smith, Prologis is not the one that built those appartments downtown. "
No, Prologis didn't exist back then but those two buildings on Ash on both sides of the tracks and those across from the station are on Catellus land - they had excellent overhead pictures of both properties intheir annual reports. As for my developer comments - everybody on this website lives in a house (of some sort) built by a developer - does that make all of us "guilty" by association ?? TCS - and again, will it affect railfanning in Sandy Eggo ? No. |

RE: San Diego WILL Become a quiet zone: 6:2 vote
A Bell is plenty of warning for those hours, with the movement at restricted speed. There is always that dope who will stumble onto the tracks whether the horn is blowing or not, and the occasional suicide. Only a Jackass with marital problems or a chip on his or her shoulder will blow like a damn fool at that hour. To them it's a joke to wake up all the hi-tech folks and the zute suiters. Were talking about an IQ of about 40, and that's a combined number. Most BNSF hoggers are fine, respectable folks like myself. These new heads need to get their arses in order or get out of town.

You fans need to re-read Eric's post I would like to point out that I do not oppose quiet zones at all. I simply believe that reasons for installing the quiet zone are invalid. As I have stated, I've spent nights in three hotels near the tracks in San Diego and had no problems with noise from train horns. |
