I can honestly say that not once while being down there was I ever jolted out of my sleep between the hours of 11pm and 6am by a train horn.

Quote:From the Article
Once the quiet zone designation is in place conductors can be fined for using their horns between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Improvements will begin in August and are expected to be completed by November 2011.

The whole PARAGRAPH is written by a nincompoop!

Quote:After the merge of ATSF and BN, BNSF Railroad got rid of the old small eight axle diesels with the horn mounted over the cab and not much louder than a Semi and brought in monster 12 axles into Downtown San Diego. The trains were designed to go 70 miles per hour over the great plains and the horns were designed to reach out ahead of them in areas with no guarded crossings. The horns are so loud that the engineers required them to be mounted back in the middle of the engine so they would not become death.

Difference between axles and wheels, The Railroad doesn't listen to what engineers want, And I think the writer is death himself.

To be fair, I don't mind the concept of a Quiet Zone in San Diego and wouldn't mind every crossing being upgraded to QZ specs, in my opinion the overuse of horns is causing people to become complacent when they hear them, thus why as we trudge down the bluffs at 60 MPH the stupid joggers don't notice us until we've been wailing on the thing for a good ten seconds and someone jogging the other way grabs them. I highly doubt crews will be fined if the ENGINEER sounds the horn in the QZ, especially if there is a legit reason to use it (Fines are for not using safety devices as required, not for using them too much). My problem with this is it's all political smoke and mirror, people have overreacted to a nothing problem and the politicians see a way to pad their pockets. If there were serious desires to get this done on the political front it would have been completed long ago.

My problem with it is that the developers own this town and can get done whatever they want with it. I read more and it looks like a lot of the support for this crap comes right from the hotels and those damn appartments. Then, the whiny moneybags who live in the things come and complain about everything (not unlike my nextdoor neighbors who call and complain to MCAS Miramar every time they hear an FA-18 flying over head). I get really sick of how people complain about everything, yet they want to do whatever they want. If there was actually a ligitamate reason for the quiet zone, I wouldn't even care.

Horns are warning devices, not toys. But some peolpe really need to get a thicker skin.

I've actually stayed at the Embassy Suites in downtown SD before, facing the tracks, and could hardly hear anything with the sliding glass door closed. Same goes for staying in the Best Western and Holiday Inn. Hmmm... must be some incredibly light sleepers.

Funny-lol-blue-056Funny-lol-blue-056Funny-lol-blue-056Funny-lol-blue-056Funny-lol-blue-056Funny-lol-blue-056 DO THESE PEOPLE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AXLES AND WHEELS? Funny-lol-blue-056 I doubt a 12-axle locomotive would even make it around Miramar hi-Oh wait, 3751 has 16 axles! Well there goes that moment.
Anyways, this is very poor writing and in my opininon a weak argument. I have never been in favor of quiet zones as people are more likely to get hit. From what I've seen in San Clemente he who is weak on the horn seems to get more people barging in front of of his train. A quiet zone may make it well...quieter, but the number of people hit would probably increase at least 50%.
...
Have these people thought of wayside horns yet?

RE: San Diego WILL Become a quiet zone: 6:2 vote
Thinking that it would be ludcrous for them to build a quiet zone and only have it between 11 PM and 6 AM, I emailed these lunatics and this is the reply I got:

Quote:Michael,

No –it will be a 24 hour Quiet Zone. The Ordinance that was passed in 2002 was worded for the hours between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. The Quiet Zone is a planned 24 hour Quiet Zone per the FRA’s Final Rule for the Use of Locomotive Train Horns.
