RE: Whatizzit
It's a whistle sign. It's supposed to remind the engineer to blow the whistle/horn at the specific area.

RE: Whatizzit
Usually the number under the W indicated the number of crossings.

It may be a new sign, but the "W" symbol itself has been around for a long time.

aaahhh I get it now '4' would be the number of tunnels ahead in this case. Are they required to hit the horn before a tunnel now? S-H

Was this on the UP or on the BNSF? UP uses X signs for crossings, and the W is for where they want the engineer to sound the whistle, such as a bridge with close clearance or tunnels. It is to warn roadway works that a train is coming and to get to the clear, to give them a bit of extra warning.

The BNSF just uses the W sign for everything.

And the number below means that there is that many crossings or the such less than 1/4 of a mile apart since the sign is to be 1/4 mile in approach of the crossing.

Its a UP sign, on the northbound approach of tunnel #8,#7,#6,#5 on the Cuesta grade. S-H

The W has been the sign for whistling long before Moby d*** was a minnow AND WAY before everyone started saying horn for whistle!
