The SP Permanente Local rolls through the burbs near Saratoga, California in February of 1995. This old orchard tree has just a few days left before the Santa Clara Valley Water District installs their pipe on the right of way. The Vasona Branch (aka Los Altos Branch) used to be lined with fruit trees in the days of steam.

SP caboose 4754 rolls across Stevens Creek Boulevard during sunset, and would also vanish from the Permanente Local run several years later. Those were interesting times indeed for the train.

Neat stuff, Sam! Where, prey tell was/is this local? where did it go on duty and what were some of its significant industries?

Thanks guys. The local went on duty at San Jose three days a week, and went to Hollister on the other three days. During the time I photographed the local it was a straight run to the cement plant at Permanente. They usually cut the train off past the Monta Vista passenger stop and doubled the hill into the plant.

RE: Permanente Blossoms
Great pictures! I'm not a NorCal railfanner but I am very interested in San Jose-area lines. Also, loving the 4-axle SP power (I'm guessing GP40s) and Baywindow!
...
Do you have any pictures of that site today? That would make a great before-after comparison.
