La Mirada Vicinity 2004 Time Warp
Some images from around the BNSF La Mirada yard that I took back in February of 2004.
Most of these can not be repeated today. Kinda strange. Not going to win any photography awards with this one, but here is BNSF 1666 sitting at the La Mirada yard office. A GP9u that at one time was the standard on the LM local pool. Directly across the street was Rohm and Haas Polymers and Resin business La Mirada plant. This plant was leveled in late 2009/ early 2010. A bit further south down this row was another plastics company. Do not recall their name. This facility still stands, but I have not seen rail cars on their spur in ages (years) In my folder of images from this day, I came across this image of track. I can not locate where this was taken. Any clues would be appreciated. I am sure it is on the south side of Alondra and north of Firestone in the same area as all these images. This is the old Nabisco building that occupied a large plot of real estate next to the 5 freeway. I only photographed this building with rail cars on the property one time. Always wanted to catch a switch job here. Building was sold a few months later and then razed a couple years after that. Some box cars on a short spur with the Monad Railway Equipment E unit off in the distance down the row. Lastly is a shot of some box cars and an interesting rail car between two freight distribution warehouses looking towards La Mirada yard from Alondra. The track on the right still gets these long strings of box cars. Chris - Shoot it while you can. Chris Walker - Forum Owner |

That Nabisco plant made gram crackers and they would get covered hoppers of oats or something.
I think they had two spurs on the property that lead into covered wells where they would unload the cars (sort of like Kimberly Clark). Rodents were a big problem at that plant and they had all kinds of automatic doors on the loading dock to keep them out. I think they also made salteen crackers there too. Chris, let me see if I can't help you with the IDs on some of these locations...
First, the string of plastic pellet hoppers looks to be spotted at track 6466, formerly IMCO Marine. Don't think they are there anymore. Next, the shot looking through the open security door is the north side of Service Craft, track 6675, off the Nabisco lead south of the balloon. Took the shot looking west from Rostrata Ave. just east of the spot. Third, the two Hi-cubes are spotted at track 6321 for US Gypsum, off the C lead which runs into Monad Railway Equipment. And fourth, the two long spurs that run southward away from the yard towards Alondra are the Delco lead (6340) used to access Weber (reverse switch), and Home Depot with all the 60' Hi-cubes, track 6343. The 1st and 2nd La Mirada are/were the normal switchers for these industries. Mr. MRL |

RE: La Mirada Vicinity 2004 Time Warp
Great.. thanks. I was wondering where Home Depot was as I have heard the 2nd call for switching cars on that spur before. The track gets some really sweet late afternoon light for coloful box car photography.
Appreciate the info and help with my mystery track photo. Chris Chris Walker - Forum Owner |
