Music, Carnival Rides and Centennial Cupcakes
Join us this Saturday, June 25, to celebrate the Port's 100th

June 21, 2011

Only four days left for the party of the century. Please join us this Saturday, June 25, as the Port of Long Beach celebrates its 100th birthday with memorable exhibits, carnival rides and Centennial Cupcakes.

To commemorate the occasion, two of the best local bakeries have created Centennial Cupcakes that will be distributed during the event. Come and enjoy the baked creations of Rossmoor Pastries and Krista’s Kupcakery.

This event is free and open to the public. Other attractions include the season's opening performance by the Long Beach Municipal Band and other local attractions: The Yesterdays, Long Beach Poly Jazz Quintet, Recycled Drum Circle and the Long Beach Ballet. Actor Robert Wagner, who narrates the documentary "Faces of the Port: Remembering 100 Years" to debut at the event, will be the master of ceremonies.

Bring your picnic baskets and lawn chairs, and enjoy the day's celebrations.

Festivities will begin at 2:30 p.m.

• 2:30 p.m. Event begins, exhibits open to public.
• 3 p.m. Premiere screening of "Faces of the Port: Remembering 100 Years" - A 30-minute documentary narrated by actor Robert Wagner.
• 3:30 p.m. "Let's Talk Centennial," a history panel discussion moderated by veteran maritime reporter George Cunningham.
• 4:15 p.m. Second screening of "Faces of the Port: Remembering 100 Years."
• 5:15 p.m. Centennial presentations with Robert Wagner.
• 5:45 p.m. Centennial Cupcakes.
• 6 p.m. Concert performance by the Long Beach Municipal Band.
• 8 p.m. Event concludes.

The 100th Birthday Party will be held right on the docks on Pier E, just south of the Gerald Desmond Bridge, at Ocean Boulevard and Pico Avenue.

No train rides?

No 3751 (I figured that one was unlikely)?

No port boat rides?

I read 3751 was invited but couldn't make it because of the sharp turns to get into the port.

You are aware that 3751 has been to the port previously ?

I don't see a reason for them to be there beyond thew ooh, ahh factor.
Also note "more activities are planned" .... stay tuned.

Port of Los Angeles, yes. Port of Long Beach, no.

"We have seen some comments about a run to Long Beach...While we had been approached to do so, the curves into the display site are too tight for the locomotive, so we will not be able to participate in the event..."

Yes, but... the thing is, to be perfectly honest... and I think TC can back me up on this... we have cupcakes in Santa Monica too.

Unless that PHL exhibit is going to be the PR30C parked away from a fence in good light without anyone allowed beyond the photo line, I think I'll skip it this year (Santa Monica fireworks are that night - shhh - it's our town secret - we always do them a week in advance so no one from out of town comes and bother us).

3751 can't come to Santa Monica either... not enough track.

Oh .. there are lots of Cupcakes in Santa Monica, that's for sure.

I think your confusing this with the Green Port festival they have at the end of September or early October Charles. This is the Centennial Celebration. 100 years only comes around ... yeah, you guessed it.

That being said.. I doubt I will head over their either, but I would fathom a bet that the PR30C could be a runner up as a display engine. Likelyhood it will be a 80 or 81 as they seem to be the showboats but ya never know.

Would you like them to move the engine around with the angle of the sun during the day for you also Wink

Hey - cupcakes, huh?

:-)

You're right, I did confuse it.

Moving it around for the sun angle would be nice if I was there, but as I won't be there, couldn't really care less, I guess.

Honestly, if not for the conflict, I might have considered it, but have to be a dad and take the kids to fireworks or they'll write a book about me when they're older.
