Where did line coming into Coronado Island go?
In 2002, when visiting the Hotel Coronado, I explored the area and sawhere a railroad right of way apparently traveled to Coronado Island along California 75 and curved right along theast side of Pomona Ave.

http://maps.google.com/?ll=32.685096,-11...16&vpsrc=6

Looking now from aerial view, did it continue on what is now Pomona Ave and curve left onto 3rd street and straight into the air base?
Or does Pomona rise too steeply?

When was the lastrain and when was the track taken up?

I see that it is now the Bayshore Bikewy (Silver Strand Bikeway)
Did "Silver Strand" refer to the rails?

Thank you.

I think the tracks on the strand have been completely gone since 2005. I think at one time, the trolleys continued down Orange Ave. somehow, but not sure how they connected or when that ws removed. Possibly 1949 with the rest of the trolley system?

RE: Where did line coming into Coronado Island go?
Hanft's book on the SD&AE does not have an exact date that rail service to Coronado ended, but he assumed that it was near the end of the 1960s. The last traffic into Coronado was for the Navy base and occasional tank cars of fuel oil rot the hotel.

I think that the term "Silver Strand" predates the railroad.

In 2002 I did not.ice any track. But I did not walk too far southeast along CA-75.
I noticed what appeared to have been a right of way.
Since it was night, I lost track of where the track could have gone on Pomona.
The way Ponoma gently curves and curves left into 3rd Street, it appears to have been the railroad right of way.

Also noticed in GooglEarthat rails remain in the cement pavement on the base.
Did the track travel down the middle of 3rd Street into the base?

Thank you.

The tracks on the main part of the strand were gone by 1999. At the base, however, there were parts in place up to 2005 when the bike path was extended. There is still a reminent of the CBRR/SDERy running from national city south. Also, I think the name "silver strand" has to do with the sand but I'm not 100% certain on that one.

Hmmm...maybe the trail is just another clever way of rail-banking a corridor for the MTS?

Probably proposed and torn to shreds by wild NIMBYs.

From the desk of the Amtrak Fan: I'd say "Silver line" but that's the name of the downtown PCC service...

Yes, that ROW was rail-banked for possible future use. I think most, if not all is owned by MTS. They were looking into re-opening it a while back, but that never came to pass.

MSA - would be cool if SDERA operated tourist trains (or trolleys) from their nat'l city depot to coronado...one can dream, right?

MTS - Dan Diego Metropolitan Transit System

MSA - my signature

SDERA - San Diego Electric Railway Association

As I said before, at one time, it continued straight down Orange Ave. Since the late 1800's when the line was built, I suspect the tracks have been moved a number of times.

Thanks, MSA.
Are you referring to a trolley line on Orange Avenue?
I recall Orange Avenue near Hotel Coronado being too steep for a train.
Was Palm Avenue ever a railroad right of way?
Otherwise, it is inefficient to run a diagnonal street. (Look at those wasteful triangles at intersections.)
