Back in the early 2000s when they were still using trains to do the munition off-loading and on-loading, a friend who is a longtime railfan suggested I set myself up on PCH and shoot from there if the train came by. I never tried it because there was no way of knowing when they were running and it seemed like a lot of work for a shot that might get me in trouble too.

It was back in 1997.

Indeed.

This is an older view from Bing with some boxcars parked there for some reason. You can just barely see another 80-tonner parked inside.

Yes, I have prints of the sand operation taken by member of operating crew. They got posted here on WCRF once, but I cuddn't tell you how to find 'em now.

Well those b&ws are snaps of Navy ops on base, but I was referring to a few color shots of the sand ops, per se. Tnx anyway.

Never seen the photos your referring to Steve .. but if you want to float them to my email inbox as you did the others I would be happy to post them for you. I personally only saw one train run and I am pretty sure it was the last one that Coast Rail Service ran. I was at Arnies Model Train store when it went by heading west. Was much more into modeling then so I just watched it and then continued my shopping.
