Why does thatrack deflect south and then north again?
Does the farthestrack crossing drop as much as it appears in the photo above?

There were "obstacles" in place when those tracks were layed that no longer exist, remember also you're looking at compression of over a mile and a half.
Both tracks continue down to the Santa Ana River bridge before beginning the climb to the summit (Beaumont).
Just wait, it'll get even more interesting when they start temporary arrangements and substructure construction.

Many decades ago the MT was shifted south to accomodate a stub ended siding at the former SP depot and PE interchange.
