RE: More "Quiet Zone" in the Future?
I would expect to see much more of this in SoCal. Just about every city is going to investigate the possibility of a Quiet Zone I would suspect. When some of them see the costs, they'll back away, or levy special taxes for areas around the tracks.
I personally really like QZ's, and I know I'm in the minority of rails and railfans, but to me, at a good crossing cars are stopped well before they hear a horn. And the lack of horns makes people pay more attention to when they do hear a horn. |

Just as long as they keep the foam pacified (couple blasts in acknowledgement of a tripod or something thereof) we won't see any of these kids losing it.

If people continue to abuse it, I will remove the feedback option and reserve it for site staff. It has already been topic of discussion amongst the mods and myself and it will be watched. Hopefully people grow up or leave. ... now back to the regular topic of discussion. Thanks. Chris Walker - Forum Owner |

I've long said this to non-rails for as long as I've had enough experience to have an opinion (ok, when an old-head explained to me her opinion on the matter and I decided I agreed with it) that I think the horn should be reserved JUST for emergencies and special events ("Whistling Off" a retiree, memorials, etc.). When a horn becomes a routine sound we tend to tune it out, and it loses it's ability to provide warning. In addition, quiet zones have so much extra signage and protection that "accidental incursions" are a lot less likely to happen, someone has to be TRYING HARD to ignore the gates, and when you're trying that hard then you'll be a lot more aware of your surroundings then someone who just did it because they were able to, or didn't notice. I'm all for quiet zones. |

RE: More "Quiet Zone" in the Future?
The best part of quiet zones is the childish ba$#@rds that roam work for certain RR companies no longer get to blast the horns at 3am with their "I have to be awake all night so I'm gonna wake up as many people as I can" mentality.
(not all Rails are like this mind you but the few give the many a bad name) TCS - "oh it's afternoon rush hour ? let me drop it down a few notches and take my time ..." |
