1st LM on Olive Sub and UP on Orange
Today while waiting at the signal at Placentia Ave for the 3rd LM to finish shoving boxcars east which took several minutes I heard the 1st LM asking for clearance to head down the Olive Sub from Atwood so I raced down to the railbridge that crosses the Santa Ana river.

Looking north I see the 1st LM just finishing it's move onto the sub from Adams Steel. I didn't get a photo since it was too far away but I got this video of it heading south over the bridge:

I followed it a bit down and then raced to CP Maple. This is it getting on to the Orange/San Diego sub from the Olive sub:

And here it is moving north on the Orange sub:

On the scanner I heard a UP local ask for clearance to use the Orange sub and lucky me it showed up a few minutes later. I believe it's the Costa Mesa local.

Thanks for looking!

It wasn't me.

Awesome catches. All the action has to happen when I'm not staying in the area, which disappoints me.
One of these days...

It was. Right place at the right time, nice catches. Happy to see your listening to the OC Radio feed on your Android. Smile

Sorry to nitpick Eric but ....

It is just UP. The Y is a designation used on Yard switchers because they had more than 9999 engines on their roster at one time due to assimilation of other railroads and were not permitted a 5th number for extending their roster.

It would be the Union Pacific Costa Mesa "Switcher".

Nice when things come together like that.

Ya, it saves me the expense of buying a scanner and carrying it around everywhere. It would've been nice to meet up again to chase trains.

RE: 1st LM on Olive Sub and UPY on Orange
That's a weird move you caught.

1. This work is/was usually handled by the 5th La Mirada at nighttime, not the 1st.
2. They have the same cars passing the Santa Ana River as they do at CP Maple but there are corn syrup tankcars (ADMX/CRGX, etc) on both ends of the train. Sunny Delight on the Olive Sub gets those, as does Nor-Cal Beverage (Coca-Cola) on the Orange Sub.
3. Wyeing the train at CP Maple like they did would make it very difficult to switch Nor-Cal Beverage at Anaheim because the switch faces the wrong way.

I don't get it.

Yeah I totally would have been there but I was busy at home & not savi on what was going on until it was too late.

And btw David, of all the years I've been here I've never seen anyone use that wye. If you look at Google maps it shows MOW equipment stowed hehe.

Thanks Chris, I fixed everything. It was such a spur of the moment thing, I had to delay a conference call just so I could catch it all. Clients weren't mad and I got to see trains so I'm happy Smile

Gerry and I were texting during all of this and he was sorely missing the action.

I don't get it either but the train-gods were with me today and allowed me to catch these locals so I'm more than pleased.

I also saw a P42 pulling a Surfliner south just when I arrived at CP Maple. And when I was done I headed to Anaheim Station and saw the Operation Lifesaver Surfliner heading south but I couldn't get a photo since I was having my conference call.

It wasn't me.

Funny you mention the wye. I just brought that up in the Metrolink Placentia station thread.

Amtrak #36 detoured over that wye in the mid-1990's. There was a grade crossing accident between Fullerton and Atwood. Some quick thinking resulted in the Desert Wind detouring that way.

But you're right, I don't think it's been used for trains in the last 10-15 years.

They didn't use the wye, they just went caboose-first down Olive and engine first up Orange.

It wasn't me.
