December 2011 Photography Contest - Meets out on the Mainline - CLOSED

Open entry period will run from December 3rd through December 31st. On January 1st (or shortly after) the voting poll will be set up in the Contest Voting forum.

For the month of December 2011, the photography contest topic will be meets out on the mainline. Images for this contest must show two or more train meeting on the mainline. There should be two trains going the opposite direction.

If it is not obvious that the two trains are heading in opposite directions, you must indicate it in your description of the image. An example of a not so obvious meet could be of the head end of one train along side the DPUs of the other train as in the image below:

   

Description: UP 3861 leads a southbound train as it passes the DPUs of a northbound train at Daggett. Both trains were in motion.

An image of two commuter trains or passenger trains stopped in the station at the same time is acceptable. However, images of trains sitting side-by-side at L. A. Union station or other stations where the trains come off the mainline will not be accepted for this month's contest.

Please do not submit images of trains in rail yards since the contest is for meets out on the mainline. An image of two trains meeting on the mainlines while passing by a yard is acceptable.

The entries are moderated, so they will not show up until the contest administrator approves them. If the entry is not approved, you will receive a private message explaining why it was not approved.

Images must be added as attachments to the thread. Do not link images from other sites because linked images make it difficult to set up the voting poll.

Do not comment or ask question in this thread since it is for contest entries. If you post a comment of question in this thread, it will be deleted.

Entry #1 - Double UP's at Dagget

A UP intermodal and a UP manifest cross paths at Dagget on 4/17/11. Although it may not seem like it, both trains are moving in opposite directions. What the manifest did was pull up past the crossing, stop, and back all the way down without turning off the headlights! That's why there was a crew in it. And while the manifest was backing down the intermodal came up next to it and passed it heading in the opposite direction.

Entry #2 - Nighttime Meet at Lavic

   

As an eastbound double stack train winds it's way through the S turns at Lavic, the head end of a westbound pig train meets it at half way with the vehicle lights from Interstate 40 on the right. The change in direction of the eastbound bound train is what causes the flare at the apex of the S curve.

A Union Pacific manifest train makes its way down Cajon Pass as an eastbound ethanol train heads up Cajon.

The B-LACLAC meets a departing Northbound Surfliner. Both trains are moving in opposite directions.

A west-bound Union Pacific stack train rolls by an east-bound UP manifest as they cross the mouth of the Deschutes river.

I-84 and the Columbia river are to the left.
