Railtrain working south from Caliente
I had a short job in Shafter, which gave me the opportunity to drive back via Hwy 58 and plan stops at Caliente, the Loop, etc.

This is what confronted me as I drove to the bottom. Rail train dropping off new ribbon rail at walking speed. MoW, track workers and supervision were everywhere, with at least 7 service vehicles, a couple of dump trucks, and 2 Renzenburgers at the ready.

This is southbound from Caliente. I didn't investigate further toward Bakersfield, though a speedswing was sitting west of Caliente in the canyon almost out of sight.

This could also be a heads up, but I am not aware of when the work will start. Also saw a minor number of tie cars at Mojave, not enough for this magnitude of a project.

Needless to say, nothing but the railtrain was moving from Sandcut to Mojave, and nothing was on sidings except one in Caliente, there to pick up one car left at Bealville.

From what a Cal. State RR Museum member told me a few days ago while on the Zephyr, they're putting in new rail over Donner as well.

Alex ~ Maybe this will play out to be west-coast wide, just a guess.

Not a rail gang. Relaying ties through March over Donner with the TRT.

They had a loaded tie train at Roseville, and three rail trains at Sparks yard (1 out of three fully loaded). Ballast trains seen around Dutch Flat and Colfax. They have new rail and ties laid from just east of Newcastle downgrade now, still wooden ties in the tunnel at Newcastle. Thought that was interesting. Had a slow order through there, and met #6 west of the tunnel. They have new rail laid on both sides of the mains from Colfax down to Newcastle not yet in place, still wooden ties present.
