Railroad location nick names
I thought that the topic of locations that are not shown in the timetable and there names would make an interesting topic. To keep from hijacking the other thread I started this one.
In another thread "V" posted the following. "There are a few "CP JACKs" on the UP. They are not official control points, but are where you will generally find a Jack in the Box. There is one CP Jack on the Coast Sub on theMulford line. If the dispatcher needs to hold you back, out of Newark, going east (UP south) he will call you and tell you to stay at "CP Jack". The crew knows it's coffee time then." So my next question is, if there are several CP Jack's are there also CP Mac's? V and any other rails out there, what are other interesting names that are used for holding trains and other reasons? Remember guys if it cannot be said on the radio is should not be said here. I know there are nicknames that can not be used in mixed company. ![]() John |

RE: Railroad location nick names
There is a spot in Binghamton NY for sure that is called CP McDonalds by crew. It is railroad BD Cabin and is now in the parking lot of a Micky Ds.
V can help with the next part of my response, because I wasn't in California yet to know this, but I think that the McDonalds on Santa Monica Blvd in West Los Angeles was an SP hangout when the Wonder Bread bakery in Beverly Hills still received cars. Was that called CP McDonald's V? Or was the too long ago? |

RE: Railroad location nick names
One spot I've been curious about is the exact location of the Ice Deck on the SP at the old Colton Yard area.
I recall seeing the PFE Icing plant back in the sixties, but can't place it in relation to what the area is like now. I seem to recall it was west of the yard and Santa Fe crossing, where GATX is now. But when I hear it called out over the radio, the dispatchers and crews seem to be indicating the bridge over the Santa Ana River. Can someone help point it out to the buildings that are there now? It was actually east of GATX and east of the Old Yard. It's over by Hunts Lane (well the area to the west of Hunts Lane). Today, I hear them call this area Hunts Lane more than Ice Deck, but that may just be the times I've picked up on what they were saying. |

RE: Railroad location nick names
The old PFE facility at Colton was on the south side of the old yard. A new ice dock with an mechanized icing machine was built east of the Santa Ana River bridge during the 1950s.

RE: Railroad location nick names
The San Diego freights at one time made setouts for the Santa Ana-Irvine area on a siding called Case Swayne. It was next to the Case Swayne warehouse between the SR 55 overpass and Red Hill Ave.

Hunts Lane is used for crew changes, the siding is still referred to as the Ice Deck (such as parked ballast trains ..)

Thanks to all who pointed me in the right direction. I've seen the sugar train parked next to Ashley/Colton Clinic area. I guess the topography for that place and the area at Pepper & Slover would look close without the development that has gone on at the old mech PFE plant. That is what was throwing me, as I remember the hill coming down behind the icing decks clearly, but didn't notice the grain silos back then, but it was very close to the SP yard. Steve |
