Timetable direction on the Surfline
Since 1904, when the Santa Fe took over operations of the Southern California Railway properties and formed the LA Division, it has been westward from San Diego (National City) to Los Angeles. During the SC Rwy operations both east-west and north-south were used with north-south being used on the Surfline. Los Angeles was usually considered to be the western most point with even the Harbor District being westward from the harbor to LA (this was later changed).

During the Santa Fe operation of the Olive District/Subdivision it was westward Atwood to Orange where the westward SDX (Daygo) became a eastward freight to San Diego.

The numbering of Santa Fe passenger train was a good indication of timetable direction since westward train were odd numbered and eastward trains were even numbered. Unlike today where the train numbers are not used as authority to operate train and you see odd and even numbered train operating in the same direction on some line.
