Derailment in Tehachapi (1/31 or 2/1)
Via a friend: "big train derailment on Tehachapi forces us to go up the Coast Line (normal route) to Oakland." - From the Tioga Pass on a soon to depart Amtrak 14, 2/1.
Anyone have info on this? |

A UP train derailed 3-4 cars on the Mojave sub at MP 344. Thats about all I know right now.

Maybe a coast re-route for UP trains? Interested in reading more on this.

Found a post on Altmont Press, that four cars derailed somewhere in the area of tunnel eight.

RE: Derailment in Tehachapi (1/31 or 2/1)
My friend who lives near Cable told me that trains are passing through at 10MPH Speed Restriction, as of 1pm. So the wreck is clear of and operations are up and going

RE: Derailment in Tehachapi (1/31 or 2/1)
Trains will not reroute down the coast unless a derailment is catastrophic enough forcing the issue, i.e. hazmat/fire. Train lengths on originators out of Roseville and West Colton (8500 plus feet) make it hard for meets as the coast has short sidings by today's standards and would be very counter productive.
All it takes is a Tonka Toy to push stuff out of the way and get things running. Axy |

RE: Derailment in Tehachapi (1/31 or 2/1)
Why we don't see many Coast Line re-routes
------------------------------------------------------------------- Coast Line sidings in a nutshell: From Ventura, you got Seacliff, Santa Barbara, Ellwood, and Goleta. Then every siding is short, no approach signals, and restricted to 10 MPH until Pismo. I have my doubts about that one, too... Then into SLO on two miles of 2MT running. Up through Chorro, Serrano, and a ways of what looks like 2MT running near Santa Margarita (the only reasonable siding outside of SLO). I don't know about anything between Templeton and Salinas. Gonzales, Bradley, and a few other points aren't exactly high-speed, either... Once out of Watsonville, you've got 2MT up to Pajaro Canyon. Then down to 1MT / 2MT from Gilroy to San Jose. If you want to saw, grapple with sluggish siding conditions, and delay your service and others even further, be my guest. 風 の エンジニア |

RE: Derailment in Tehachapi (1/31 or 2/1)
10 MPH? Is that just for the freights? Or do all trains have to go that slow? Seems like an awful inconvenience.
