Looking for Hotel in San Diego Overlooking Trains
My wife and I are still trying to decide where to go for the weekend, we really want to get out of town badly. She mentioned SLO but the museum there is not open yet.
I was thinking of San Diego and want to stay at a hotel that overlooks either the Santa Fe station or the rail yard. We don't mind the constant train horns, we stayed at a hotel in Santa Barbara within a block from the mainline without a problem. Any recommendations? The Holiday Inn is pretty close but I don't know how good the view is of the station. The Hilton Bayfront is close to the railyard but I also don't know how much of the yard you can see from there. It wasn't me. |

The Hilton is good for the rail yard. Not sure about a view of the station. Be sure to check out the vintage trolley!

The Bayfront has a pedestrian bridge leading to the ballpark that runs over the yard throat. Not sure how busy the yard will be but ask for a room above the parking level ( 10th or higher) on the north east side.
Nothing near the station with a view that I know of. TCS - have a good weekend |

They usually build the afternoon/evening departure in the BNSF yard and stage it right outside the Hilton. The past two weeks have had the return power on the head end and both trains were over 8 engines. You can watch them from the hotel, or from the bridge on Harbor Drive or as TC said the pedestrian bridge over the tracks. I will be working the Trolley yard tomorrow if you come by ask for Barry. They'll find me. |

RE: Looking for Hotel in San Diego Overlooking Trains
I love reading comments about the hotels where they tell you to stay away because of the train horns, I see those comments as a beacon. We ended up going to Palm Springs, its very quiet here (no hustle and bustle of the city) which was another option that I didn't mention.
Next time I know where to stay when I go to SD, thanks for your input! On a side note, when I was hanging out with SPCMLocal (Gerry) the topic was brought up about what we would do if we were multi-billionaires. We agreed that buying a shortine was mandatory, but the interesting thing was purchasing or building a motel next to a busy ROW so we could rent it out to railfans for a small fee, of course, because we know how railfans party like rockstars. It wasn't me. |
